I got the Contest Bug

My first ever contest and a big one at that, I decided I was going to “GO in BIG”! CQWW SSB.
Bag of nervousness on the day as we were traveling over from Barnsley to Patrington, but on arriving at the Club and walking in the door the buzz was evident.

I was greeted by Kevin M0KVK who asked me if I was looking forward to having a go- “yes so long as nobody is listening” was my reply.
Many new faces at the Club that I didn’t know and a few I had already met Kevin (M0KVK), Andy (G7LRR), John (G6LNV), and of course the Husband Chris G0URH.

The contest started at 1 am Saturday morning and finished at midnight on Sunday. The night shift got off to a good start, racking up the overnight contacts and giving us a head start with over one million points already.
I started off listening to others and sat with a spare set of headphones at the side of Chris, listening to how it was done, before plucking up the courage to have a go myself.
Then I started out on 80m and after a while had a go on 40m, I felt more comfortable on 80m so moved back to that station, as I believe the members termed it “The old man Station” because it was slower placed.

After that, I got the “Bug” and was in the zone and made it mine, not a chance I was moving, (I did eventually!).
Andy (G7LRR) was in his element, running around from station to station repairing broken headsets on the fly and other pieces of kit that needed a tweak as the contest went on, also putting up a new Arial @6am Saturday Morning for 10m band.

Although he did seem like an amateur on 80m station when he kept hitting the wrong button on a new keyboard and putting the computer logging system to sleep. I eventually asked him to move so I could show him how it was done hi hi.

Food was supplied for the contest team by Andy’s Lovely Wife Linda (M6LGN) in the form of 2 Large slow cookers with Beef Stew, which went down a treat, Tea and coffee also flowed freely all weekend.

I want to say a massive thanks to everyone for all their efforts and for making me feel welcome.
All the best and 73’s Sue M6URG.

CQWW 2022 CONTEST New Club Record

The Club was ready for this year’s CQWW contest and determined to beat last year’s scores.

Through planning, lots of maintenance, and a much bigger team of operators covering the full 48 hours of the contest this time around.
Again, we used 3 stations and an antenna for every band, although this time we had 17 operators who covered various hours and times but never left any station left idle.
As usual, each station was set up with full automation should the operator need it.
This year saw us with more guest operators to whom we are extremely grateful, which gave us that winning edge.

The Club started off at 01.00 am covering the 160, 80, and 40-meter bands, with a team of 5 operators
Andy G7LRR, Kevin M0KVK, Steve M0EBJ, Toby 2E0TYM, Andy (Tappy) 2E1TAP
This allowed for plenty of breaks and one operator to always be outside the operations area during the 8 hours of operating through to Saturday morning.
The score started going up very quickly, with Top Band proving to be the surprise band giving us unexpected results.
Saturday morning saw a changing of the guard, although the previous team was still available and on-site throughout the day. The team even built and installed a QUAD Loop for the 10m band to assist us first ting Saturday morning.
The operators throughout the day were:
Lyns G0AZE, Bob M0RWL, Chris G0URG, Sue M6URG, John G6LNV, Marcin M0GLV, Arek M0VQP, Dave 2E0TKO, Lee G0ULN, Paul 2E0WPW, Andy M0TTL, Jon 2E0ZRO

The atmosphere in the Club was electric as we racked up point after point and by 15.30, we hit the 1 million points that the club achieved in 2021.
The team worked continuously on the radios, and during breaks tucked into the lovely Stew and cakes that Linda M6LGN had made for us all, she really did spoil us rotten throughout the weekend.
By Sunday afternoon, we had achieved the 2-million-point mark, but we wanted more and hoped for 3 million by end of the play.
The team dug in, worked right through to the last second, and achieved an incredible 2,853,699 points, and 3456 QSO’s which is a new Club record.
Overall, the event went fantastic, we had plenty of laughs and every operator played their part in this huge Club milestone.
A special thanks to all our Guest Operators, you are a massive part of the team, and very much appreciated.

If anyone would like to take a look at the Club, get involved, or need any information, please get in touch via the Club website contact details.
Contesting is such good fun, hard work yes but very enjoyable and satisfying

73 for now

2m net Sunday nights starting at 8 pm on S18 = 145.450 Mhz FM run by the Humber Fortress DX ARC members using MX0HFC callsign, all stations are welcome to call in.

If you are newly licensed or being licensed for years and want to get back into 2m radio, meet new local amateurs around the area, or just chat this is a great place to start.

We operate a round table at the start which means we take a list of all stations calling in, then we go once around that list then we open up for questions and give out reports and general chat, it’s a great place to ask questions and find out what is happening locally with the Club and around the East Yorkshire area.

We look forward to hearing you.

The Humber Fortress DX ARC has once again been invited by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, to put on a Ham Radio station during International Lighthouse on the air weekend.

Spurn High Light is a visitor attraction, and the tallest lighthouse in Northern England!

Made of 300,000 Staffordshire bricks, with a height of 128ft (39m) and 145 steps to the top landing, providing a spectacular view of the Spurn nature reserve and the River Humber.

We are pleased to have been invited back by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust to help promote the restored Spurn High lighthouse and for the 25 Anniversary of International Lighthouse Lightship Weekend and to back to Spurn Point to activate GB2SL.

Since our last visit, there have been changes to the shape of Spurn Point and it is now inaccessible to road transport due to the storms of 2013.

With at least a 200 yard break between the mainland and Spurn point making a newly created island almost at high tide.

We are taking a small team of 10, regrettably only those who can climb Stairs can attend this event, manpower and equipment will be ferried to the site by the YWT, in “or should that be on” their Unimog all-terrain vehicle.
