Isle of Muck Dxpedition GB0SIM

The Isle of Muck is part of the Scottish Small Islands group along with Rhum, Eigg and Canna called the Inner Hebrides situated off the West Coast of Scotland and has a population of around 38 only.

Two of our Club members are taking part in the Isle of Muck Dxpedition starting 15th April for around 7 days. The planning for this Dxpedition has been maticulous, as the Island has no facilities for the team to buy anything, including food. Everything they need has to be taken with them on the journey, including all the ham gear.

The team is made up from Marcin-M0GLV, Kevin-M0KVK(m), Lyns-G0AZE, Nick-G0VQO, Steve-2E0NSQ, Steve-M0EBJ(m).

They plan operating on SSB, CW, and Digital FT8 throughout the week and will be using a whole different range of antenna for this including 40m phased verticals, dipoles for all bands and a vertical for 10m. They hope to work as many stations globally as possible whilst also introducing the hobby to the Islands children from a local school, and giving an incite into alternative communications for them.

Please listen out for the team from April 15th, and help support them by calling into them on every band and mode possible. Dont forget this is a seriously collectable call sign for any ham operator as there are no hams currently on the Island of Muck.

ARRL International DX Contest 2023

ARRL International DX Contest 2023

This year the HFDXARC acquired the brand new contest call of M6C which we are very proud of and put to good use this time around.
This contest itself is very different from the CQWW, in that we can only score points with QSOs in the USA and Canada, and this meant a totally different strategy being adopted.

The team comprised of 10 members who were all geared up for different time slots throughout the weekend. This in itself was difficult, as we needed the station staffed at all times, even when North America was sleeping.
Friday night saw a team of 3 begin the contest, which started very slow ( as expected ) and eventually sprang into action sat morning. We held frequencies on 10 / 15 / 20 meters and called CQ, to which the response was amazing. At one stage on Sunday, we racked up a 400 QSO count over 2 hours.

So as you can imagine it was frantic and none stop, but during this period an old friend of the Club from over the pond, Steve W4SLT called in and wanted a quick chat with Andy G7LRR. Not exactly the right time eh, but Steve has not spoken to anyone at the Club in over 10 years, and even paid us a visit from across the pond one year. It was an absolute pleasure working with Steve who is now back in touch with the Club.
Amazingly, with the conversation over, I called CQ Contest again and was hit by a wall of stations calling in. Credit to the Americans for their patience and understanding, top operators.

So we kept at it and went right through to the finish Sunday midnight. We hit over One million points for this contest, which is an amazing achievement for the Club, given it was the first time entered by us.
The whole weekend was an absolute pleasure to be involved in, and again the support shown by both Club members and guests was incredible.
A few pictures from the event are below, but the intended video was not done as planned due to how busy everyone was. The next one we shall be better prepared for.

A massive thanks go out to everyone who took part, and to all those who supported us throughout the planning and execution of the contest. The club is picking itself back up after Covid and has a very vibrant feel to it. We have new and old members joining and also have now adopted a digital membership, following many recent requests. I got the Contest Bug

My first ever contest and a big one at that, I decided I was going to “GO in BIG”! CQWW SSB.
Bag of nervousness on the day as we were traveling over from Barnsley to Patrington, but on arriving at the Club and walking in the door the buzz was evident.

I was greeted by Kevin M0KVK who asked me if I was looking forward to having a go- “yes so long as nobody is listening” was my reply.
Many new faces at the Club that I didn’t know and a few I had already met Kevin (M0KVK), Andy (G7LRR), John (G6LNV), and of course the Husband Chris G0URH.

The contest started at 1 am Saturday morning and finished at midnight on Sunday. The night shift got off to a good start, racking up the overnight contacts and giving us a head start with over one million points already.
I started off listening to others and sat with a spare set of headphones at the side of Chris, listening to how it was done, before plucking up the courage to have a go myself.
Then I started out on 80m and after a while had a go on 40m, I felt more comfortable on 80m so moved back to that station, as I believe the members termed it “The old man Station” because it was slower placed.

After that, I got the “Bug” and was in the zone and made it mine, not a chance I was moving, (I did eventually!).
Andy (G7LRR) was in his element, running around from station to station repairing broken headsets on the fly and other pieces of kit that needed a tweak as the contest went on, also putting up a new Arial @6am Saturday Morning for 10m band.

Although he did seem like an amateur on 80m station when he kept hitting the wrong button on a new keyboard and putting the computer logging system to sleep. I eventually asked him to move so I could show him how it was done hi hi.

Food was supplied for the contest team by Andy’s Lovely Wife Linda (M6LGN) in the form of 2 Large slow cookers with Beef Stew, which went down a treat, Tea and coffee also flowed freely all weekend.

I want to say a massive thanks to everyone for all their efforts and for making me feel welcome.
