This year once again the Humber Fortress DX Amateur Radio Club will be activating GB2SL over the weekend of 19th to 20th August from Spurn Point ‘High Light’ Lighthouse (Spurn Head Peninsula).

The Humber Fortress DX ARC has once again been invited by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, to put on a Ham Radio station during International Lighthouse on the air weekend.

Spurn High Light is a visitor attraction and the tallest lighthouse in Northern England!

Made of 300,000 Staffordshire bricks, with a height of 128ft (39m) and 145 steps to the top landing, providing a spectacular view of the Spurn nature reserve and the River Humber.

We are pleased to have been invited back by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust to help promote the restored Spurn High lighthouse and to take part in International Lighthouse Lightship Weekend back at Spurn Point activating the call sign GB2SL.

Since our visit last year, there have been changes to the shape of Spurn Point and it is now inaccessible to road transport due to the big storms of 2013.

With at least a 200-yard break between the mainland and Spurn Point making a newly created island almost at high tide.

We are taking a small team of 12, regrettably, only those who can climb Stairs can attend this event, manpower and equipment will be ferried to the site by the YWT, in “or should that be on” their Unimog all-terrain vehicle.

Mills OTA weekend was a superb success

The Club opened the doors yet again to guests and ham clubs around the region, and turned out to be a massive success. The Club house was packed throughout the activation of the Haven Mill during the Mills On the Air weekend.

We had many people come join us, and we also welcomed old friends to the club house as many have not seen the new QTH at Patrington.

The event itself was very busy, and we had 3 stations running for the majority of the time, gaining us many more friends around the world. The operators worked tirelessly through even the relatively poor conditions for the weekend.

The response from other Hams was what can only be described as superb, and we would like to thank every one of them for the support.

The weekend was more about bringing the club and community together, and bringing awareness of the hobby to many who have never been on a radio. Also to support local Clubs from around the region so we may build a successful relationship with the local hams.

Again many thanks to everyone who took part over the weekend and to each guest that came to visit us.
Sue we hope you recover soon, we need our 80m queen back at the radio.

CQ WW Contest Results

The Club had been waiting for the final results of the 2022 CQWW for quite some time, but at last they are in. We finished second in England behind the RSGB with a final score of 2,295,168 and 12th position in Europe.

The Club members are extremely happy with the results, and would like to thank all our guests, and fellow hams that called into us during the contest.

Time To Bring Out The Big Guns

A couple of weeks ago Kevin 2E0KVK and Pat 2E0KCW invited a few members to a shooting day at Brandesburton shooting grounds. Kevin would provide the shotguns and Pat the air rifle.

In attendance were Kevin 2E0KVK, Pat 2E0KCW, Marcin M0GLV / SP4BHD, Dave G4ASA, Valerie M6OGK, Kay SWL, Nick G0SDI, and Geoff SWL our newest would-be member.

Valerie and Kay did not shoot with the shotgun but everyone else was very keen to have a ‘go’.

Kevin gave us a master class in range discipline and then a few pointers to everyone as they stepped up to the plate. Dave could not believe he did not hurt his shoulder but he has not been seen for a few weeks so is he really telling the truth?

Marcin could not control his trigger finger, he was sure the shotgun was an AK and was very disappointed when it wasn’t.

Geoff managed to hit 3 out of 4 but was heard to say that he felt he was no good, they were too fast and he did not know where they were coming from. This is despite the fact that he asked for Trap 2 and Trap 2 was pulled for him.

Nick shot very well with his own shotgun and considering it had not been used for about 10 years did very well indeed. We were just amazed he could open it to load it as it was that stiff.

Both Pat and Kevin are excellent shots. They showed everyone how it was done and the few that Pat missed Kevin managed to hit and vice versa.

Kay took Valerie and Geoff onto the air rifle range and gave them a quick lesson; she is an excellent shot too. Geoff has finally found his sport. He has decided to take up target shooting with an air rifle and is in the process of buying himself an air rifle.

All in all a good day out….
