Welwick Heritage Weekend

The Welwick Heritage Weekend was a resounding success. Many thanks are due to Syd M1COV, Steve 2E0 Not So Quick, Andy Gee 7 Long Range Radio, and Kevin 2E0 Old and Helpful for attending early and setting the station up.

The weekend was well attended, with John Baines, Steve and Pat Walsh, Charlie, Steve NSQ, Kev, Andy, Andrew, Linda, Syd, Pete, Simon and Tracy. Frank was also made an appearance (looking for new toys) as well as visits from various family members on the Sunday.

Some members were successful in bidding on items in the auction on the Saturday Pat got a rental agreement on a box of tools, and Syd got some more items for his collection. Andy got all sorts for his new caravan, while Steve got a nice gas BBQ.

There was plenty to see around the various field’s, vintage motorcycles, cars, tractors and farm machinery, not to mention fire engines, stationary engines and steam engines, so there was no shortage of exhibits to admire.

A few contacts on the radio were made during the day on Saturday, but night time operations were cancelled due to entertainment in the form of a barn dance and a few beers.

Two members were involved in the entertainment. A big hand to Andy ‘Van Morrison’ for a fine rendition of ‘Brown Eyed Girl’ and to Steve ‘three wheels on his wagon’ Walsh, who gave us some classics including his signature tune ‘Fields of Athenry’.

We all left the dancing to the experts (we did not want to show anyone up after all). As you may have gathered it was very much a social event, as well as having the radio to operate. Kevin got carried away in the bidding on the auction for his ‘Duck’ with John bidding against him; this was funny. Kev won and his wife is happy with the latest family member, the Duck.

Sunday got off to a slow start, breakfast being top priority after the Arctic conditions during the night. By the way, Steve and I can recommend Chicken casserole and breakfast-in-a-tin in the same pan a very wholesome start to the day.

Sunday saw family visits and the car boot sale where various purchases were made. A few contacts were also made on 40 meters again.

I think everyone who attended would support me when I thank Syd, who worked hard to make the event the success, and his willing assistants Steve and Pete.

 Welcome to the web site for the ILLW. This annual amateur radio event was started in Scotland by John Forsyth, GM4OOU, and the late Mike Dalrymple (GM4SUC), both members of Ayr Amateur Radio Group (AARG). Through the years the event has grown probably far beyond what John and Mike envisaged for it all those years ago. The fact that some 85 countries have been represented in this event since inception clearly shows that it is well on its way to becoming a premier event on the ham radio calendar.

The event evolved from the Scottish Northern Lighthouses Award Weekend a biennial event which was first held in 1993 and became the ILLW in 1998. For the history of the event see this page and here for the original ILLW web site and 1998 list by Bob Dixon, GM3ZDH. Over the years it has continued to grow and to date more than 450 lighthouses and Lightships in some 50 countries around the world are participating in the event each year.

 The event is always held on the 3rd full weekend in August starting at 0001 UTC on Saturday and finishing at 2359 UTC on Sunday. It also coincides on the Sunday with International Lighthouse Day an event organised by the Association of Lighthouse Keepers whereby many world lighthouses are open to the public for the day.

Thorngumbald Clough Lights

The leading lights (also known as range lights) sited at Thorngumbald and Salt end on the banks of the River Humber in East Yorkshire were considered by the Brethren of Trinity House, Kingston upon Hull in 1868 and temporary marks were set up and tested. The results were successful and in February 1869 the Brethren submitted their plans to Trinity House in London for the establishment of permanent lighthouses at these two locations. Thompson and Sather of Hull erected all four lighthouses for £1064.

The two lighthouses at Thorngumbald Clough were established in July 1870 and built on the foreshore on half an acre of land purchased at a cost of £110 from Mr. Hugh Baxter in 1869. When the military officer in charge of the Paull battery first heard of the proposals he complained that they would block his line of fire in defense of the river but was later satisfied that they could be dismantled if necessary in time of war.

The High Light was constructed of wrought iron girders erected on foundations of masonry. It was a red painted wrought iron cylindrical tower 49 feet high. The circular tower was open lattice at the base for about two thirds of the height with the remainder plated in to form the lantern and storerooms. Access to the lantern was by a spiral staircase inside the open lattice work to the storeroom and then by an iron ladder from the storeroom to the lantern.

The lantern’s focal plane was 50 feet above high water. The light was originally powered by capillary wick oil lamps, but converted to electricity in 1926. The light was a holophote prismatic lens assisted by a prismatic reflector, with the resulting white fixed bright light being visible 12½ miles.

The moveable Low Light was a white painted wrought iron cylindrical tower 32 feet high originally built on a railway trolley and placed 370 feet in front of the high light. This enabled the light and the trolley sitting on railway lines to be moved along for a maximum distance of 26 feet in front of the high light to take into consideration the constantly changing shape of the sandbanks. In 1888 the track was extended by 15 feet and the light moved 7 feet 3 inches to make the correct lead with the high light. A temporary light was fixed to a pole and removed on October 15th when the move was complete.

The focal plane was 28 feet above high water and exhibited a fixed white light. The single catoptric fixed white light powered by two burners gave a nominal range of 10½ miles.

A keeper’s cottage was built by Messrs. Story and Jagger of Hull at a cost of £452 5s 2d (which also included the foundations for the high lighthouse) and was close to the low light. The low light was painted white and the cottage painted red. The keeper was paid a salary of £55 per annum and in 1939 when the keeper was Mr. H.Curtis his salary was £110 per annum with free coal and light.

Both lights were originally controlled by a clockwork switch which needed to be wound on a monthly visit by the attendant, and switched the light on 15 minutes before sunset and off 15 minutes after sunrise. Before electrification the lights together consumed 214 gallons of oil a year held in storage tanks capable of holding 165 gallons.

Today the keeper’s cottage has long since been demolished, and the moveable low light is no longer on railways lines but fixed to its base thus rendering it immovable. The high light no longer has a spiral staircase inside its frame but a series of iron ladders to take you to the storeroom.

The flood wall had recently and deliberately breached in order to flood and create a nature wetland making access to the lights no longer possible. This action is part of a national policy.

However both lights are fully operational and now can only be reached by walking along the shoreline from Paull.

1st Weekend of Int. Museums on the Air 2012

Hi All,
I would like to thank all the people who made this weekend happen and go by so well. What started out as a very wet weekend ended up being what summer used to be like, this just put the icing on a successful weekend.

Friday
After the erection of the aerial system and the tents in between the rain, it was time for radio , a good number of contacts were made on Friday evening with us been noted as “loud” on 40m. Not a bad start for GB0FP first outing of the year. The fish & Chips supper was a nice addition which everyone enjoyed. After his fill, John (M6HDX) then continued to work throughout the night, until he passed-out through exhaustion in Trevor’s chair. Bless him!

Saturday
A Fresh day brought about even more contacts on 40m from the Mobile shack, and 15m DX from the club house. There was a steady stream of contacts coming through to both stations, with members taking turns to sit in the hot seats. I have even been told that Linda spoke on the radio too? For big eats that evening, we dined on the food from the local Chinese in Thorngumbald, Grrr!, they messed the order up, which was annoying for me, as it is my local ?

 

Sunday
With the arrival of the final day of the 1st weekend of activity, we had another most welcome arrival – the sun. Summer looks like it is now heading this way. Sunday’s aim was primarily to get ready for the Press which arrived after lunch time, but this did not deter from attempting some contacts in the morning on 40m.

Around 1pm saw first member of the Press corps arrive and a photo session then ensued of Miss Kayliegh M6UKY and the other present members of the club. So this week keep on checking the “Hull Daily Mail” and the “Holderness Gazette” for the news articles. On completion of the press event, the mobile station was then dismantled and PUT away by the weary members, already for the 2nd weekend of activity, 22nd till 24th June. This time we will be operating entirely from within the walled perimeter of the fort.

Aftermath
Well after a glimpse of the online Guest Book, we are already starting to receive positive feedback. Feedback from members is already starting to flow, and so far all positive. Thank you all for this weekend. This is what it is all about – FUN.

Moving on
We have been informed that Steve, 2E0NSQ, will be singing on the camp site and Andy, G7LRR, will be taking his big tent to be used for a common meeting area. This will be pitched alongside the trailer; all other tents this next weekend will be outside the fort, along the wall of Frank’s compound. Please remember to use the common meeting area on the green for evening activities which could create a noise. If you annoy the dogs, then Frank has commented on feeding the dogs on Amateurs this weekend… Remember, the camp area is for sleeping only.

And to Little John, G6LNV, we do hope to see you released from the ‘dog-house’ soon. For those that are not aware, John forgot the 10:30pm rule and thought about going home at midnight. He ended up enjoying the comforts of the club sofa. Please remember, if you’re not out of the fort by 10:30pm, then you get to stay the night.
